Selena Gomez 2010

According to Variety, Selena Gomez is set to star in “What Boys Want,” a comedy for New Line. Gomez is best known as a star on the Disney Channel show “The Wizard of Waverly Place.”

The Variety article describes how it all came together: “New Line’s decided to find out “What Boys Want,” snapping up the comedy pitch by Amy Andelson and Emily Meyer …”

Seriously, how long did this take? Is there any reason to believe the pitch consisted of anything more than “You know that movie with Mel Gibson, ‘What Women Want?’ How about a gender reversal?’” “Great! But we really need something for younger audiences!” “Okay, then let’s make it a teenage girl!” “All right! Get one of those Disney kids in there, stat!”

Because that’s all this movie is, a gender reverse of “What Women Want.” Luckily, with the title “What Boys Want,” no one is even pretending otherwise. I’ll tell you, it was a little creepy for Mel to be reading women’s minds; most likely this version will be so tame and bland that it will seem better for Ms. Gomez (what’s she going to hear teen boys think about, “Hey, she’s hot!”). This is going to be a theatrical release, but it seems better suited for life as a Disney Channel movie.
